Eye infections from bacterial contamination of bulk-refillable liquid soap dispensers and artificial tear eye drops continue to occur, resulting in adverse health outcomes that include impaired vision or eye enucleation. Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), a common cause of eye infections, can grow in eye drop containers and refillable soap dispensers to high numbers. To assess the risk of eye infection, a quantitative microbial risk assessment for P. aeruginosa was conducted to predict the probability of an eye infection for two potential exposure scenarios: (i) individuals using bacteria-contaminated eye drops and (ii) contact lens wearers washing their hands with bacteria-contaminated liquid soap prior to placing the lens. The median risk of an eye infection using contaminated eye drops and hand soap for both single and multiple exposure events (per day) ranged from 10-1 to 10-4, with contaminated eye drops having the greater risk. The concentration of P. aeruginosa was identified as the parameter contributing the greatest variance on eye infection risk; therefore, the prevalence and level of bacterial contamination of the product would have the greatest influence on health risk. Using eye drops in a single-use container or with preservatives can mitigate bacterial growth, and using non-refillable soap dispensers is recommended to reduce contamination of hand soap. Given the opportunistic nature of P. aeruginosa and its ability to thrive in unique environments, additional safeguards to mitigate bacterial growth and exposure are warranted.IMPORTANCEPseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) is a pathogen that can persist in a variety of unusual environments and continues to pose a significant risk for public health. This quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) estimates the potential human health risks, specifically for eye infections, associated with exposure to P. aeruginosa in bacteria-contaminated artificial tear eye drops and hand soap. This study applies the risk assessment framework of QMRA to evaluate eye infection risks through both consumer products. The study examines the prevalence of this pathogen in eye drops and soap, as well as the critical need to implement measures that will mitigate bacterial exposure (e.g., single-use soap dispensers and eye drops with preservatives). Additionally, limitations and challenges are discussed, including the need to incorporate data regarding consumer practices, which may improve exposure assessments and health risk estimates.

Herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) infections are among the most frequent serious viral eye infections in the U.S. and are a major cause of viral-induced blindness. HSV-1 infection is known to induce T cell activation, proliferation, and differentiation that play crucial roles in the development of virus-induced inflammatory lesions, leading to eye disease and causing chronic corneal damage. CD80 is a co-stimulatory molecule and plays a leading role in T cell differentiation. Previous efforts to limit lesion severity by controlling inflammation at the cellular level led us to ask whether mice knocked out for CD80 would show attenuated virus replication following reactivation. By evaluating the effects of CD80 activity on primary and latent infection, we found that in the absence of CD80, virus replication in the eyes and virus reactivation in latent trigeminal ganglia were both significantly reduced. However, latency in latently infected CD80-/- mice did not differ significantly from that in wild-type (WT) control mice. Reduced virus replication in the eyes of CD80-/- mice correlated with significantly expanded CD11c gene expression as compared to WT mice. Taken together, our results indicate that suppression of CD80 could offer significant beneficial therapeutic effects in the treatment of Herpes Stromal Keratitis (HSK).IMPORTANCEOf the many problems associated with recurrent ocular infection, reducing virus reactivation should be a major goal of controlling ocular herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) infection. In this study, we have shown that the absence of CD80 reduces HSV-1 reactivation, which marks the establishment of a previously undescribed mechanism underlying viral immune evasion that could be exploited to better manage HSV infection.

Human ocular toxocariasis (OT), caused by pet roundworm Toxocara canis (Nematoda Ascaridoidea), is a worldwide ocular parasitic infection that poses a severe threat to eyesight, especially in school-aged children. However, the infection process and pathological mechanism of Toxocara are difficult to study in the human body. This study was designed to explore long-term ocular manifestations in different rodents infected with Toxocara canis, uncovering the specific pathological mechanism and migration pathway of larvae after infection. The three types of experimental animals we selected were C57BL/6 mice, Mongolian gerbils and Brown Norway rats. Mice were randomly divided into five groups and infected orally with 1000, 2000, 4000, 8000 and 10,000 T. canis eggs; gerbils were randomly divided into four groups and infected orally with 1000, 2000, 4000 and 10,000 T. canis eggs; rats were randomly divided into three groups and infected orally with 2000, 6000 and 10,000 T. canis eggs. Their ocular changes were closely observed and recorded for at least 2 months. We also enucleated the eyeballs of some animals to perform pathological sectioning and hematoxylin-eosin staining. After 3 dpi (days post-infection), hemorrhagic lesions, mechanical injury of the retina and larval migration could be observed in some infected animals. The ocular infection and mortality rates tended to be stable at 7 dpi. Larval tissue, structure disorder and inflammation could be observed in the pathological sections. In conclusion, the mice infected with 2000 T. canis eggs and gerbils infected with 1000, 2000 and 4000 T. canis eggs showing obvious ocular lesions and lower mortality rates could provide a basis for long-term observation.

Objetivo: Determinar la correlación entre la infestación por especies de Demodex y la ocurrencia de chalaziones primarios y recurrentes. Métodos: Estudio prospectivo y observacional. Se incluyeron pacientes con chalaziones primarios o recurrentes. Se tomó muestra de pestañas para determinar la presencia microscópica de Demodex spp. Se determinó la correlación entre la recurrencia del chalazión y la infestación por ácaros Demodex spp. mediante la prueba del coeficiente de correlación de rangos de Spearman. Resultados: Se incluyeron 68 pacientes adultos con diagnóstico de chalazión. En 63,2% del total de los casos se documentó la presencia de uno o más parásitos del género Demodex spp. En el estudio parasitológico cuantitativo se encontró que el 25% de todos los casos presentó infestación por Demodex spp. definida por un índice superior o igual a 0,5 parásitos por pestaña. La especie más frecuentemente encontrada fue Demodex folliculorum. De los 14 pacientes con chalazión recurrente el 50% presentó infestación por Demodex spp. y en el 91,7% de los casos la infestación fue por Demodex folliculorum. Existe una correlación positiva y directamente proporcional de (rø=+0,665; p<0,05) entre estos factores. De los pacientes con chalazión primario, solo 18,5% presentaron infestación por Demodex spp., y en el 81,6% de ellos fue causada por Demodex folliculorum. No existe una correlación significativa entre estos factores. Conclusión: Existe una correlación directa, alta y estadísticamente significativa entre la recurrencia del chalazión y la infestación por Demodex spp., no existe una correlación estadísticamente significativa entre los chalaziones primarios y la presencia de Demodex spp.(AU)


Objective: To determine the correlation between the infestation by species of Demodex spp. and the occurrence of primary and recurrent chalazia. Methods: Prospective and observational study. Patients with primary or recurrent chalazia were included. Eyelash samples were taken to determine the microscopic presence of Demodex spp. The correlation between the recurrence of the chalazia and the infestation by Demodex spp. mites was determined using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient test. Results: Sixty-eight adult patients diagnosed with chalazia were included. In 63.2% of the total cases, the presence of one or more parasites of the genus Demodex spp. was documented. In the quantitative parasitological study, it was found that 25% of all cases presented infestation by Demodex spp. defined by an index greater than or equal to 0.5 parasites per eyelash. The most frequently found species was Demodex folliculorum. Of the 14 patients with recurrent chalazia, 50% presented infestation by Demodex spp. and in 91.7% of the cases the infestation was by D. folliculorum. There is a positive, directly proportional correlation between these factors (rθ=+0.665, P<.05). In the group of patients with primary chalazion, only 18.5% presented infestation by Demodex spp., and in 81.6% of these cases it was caused by D. folliculorum. There is a non-statistically significant correlation between these two factors. Conclusion: There is a direct, high and statistically significant correlation between the recurrence of the chalazion and the infestation by Demodex spp., there is no statistically significant correlation between the primary chalazia and the presence of Demodex spp.(AU)

Antecedentes: La complicación más común tras la vitrectomía en pacientes es el resangrado en cavidad vítrea. Es importante detectar los distintos factores que pueden incrementar la tasa de resangrado vítreo en estos pacientes. Objetivo: Realizar una revisión retrospectiva de la tasa de resangrado de cavidad vítrea posterior a vitrectomía o facovitrectomía. Método: Estudio retrospectivo, descriptivo y comparativo de pacientes con diagnóstico de retinopatía diabética proliferativa con procedimiento de facovitrectomía o vitrectomía. Se obtuvieron datos de antecedentes personales patológicos, tipo de intervención quirúrgica y grado del cirujano que realizó el procedimiento. Resultados: Se revisaron 1.227 expedientes de pacientes diabéticos sometidos a vitrectomía o facovitrectomía. El 65% presentaron hipertensión arterial sistémica. La tasa de filtración glomerular promedio fue del 63,50 (±32,36) ml/min/1,73m2 y la de hemoglobina glucosilada (HbA1c) del 8% (4,6 al 15%). En la comparación de variables se obtuvo una diferencia significativa de la tasa de resangrado vítreo comparando la facovitrectomía con la vitrectomía (p=0,003), y al relacionar la vitrectomía con el resangrado, se obtuvo una razón de momios de 1,44. Conclusión: Los resultados obtenidos muestran una menor tasa de resangrado en los pacientes con retinopatía diabética proliferativa sometidos a facovitrectomía.(AU)


Background: The most common complication after vitrectomy is the rebleeding in vitreous cavity. It is important to detect the different factors that can increase the vitreous rebleeding rate in these patients. Objective: To carry out a retrospective review of the rate of vitreous rebleeding after vitrectomy or phacovitrectomy. Method: Retrospective, descriptive and comparative study of patients with a diagnosis of proliferative diabetic retinopathy with phacovitrectomy or vitrectomy procedure. Personal background data, type of surgical intervention and grade of the surgeon who carried out the procedure were obtained. Results: One thousand two hundred twenty-seven files of diabetic patients with vitrectomy or phacovitrectomy were reviewed. Sixty-five percent presented systemic arterial hypertension. The average glomerular filtration rate was 63.50 (±32.36)ml/min/1.73m2 and glycosylated hemoglobin (HBA1C) of 8% (4.6-15%). In the comparison of variables, a significant difference in the rate of vitreous rebleeding was obtained comparing phacovitrectomy with vitrectomy (P=.003), in the relationship between vitrectomy with vitreous rebleeding, an odds ratio of 1.44 was obtained. Conclusion: The results obtained show a lower rate of rebleeding in patients undergoing phacovitrectomy in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy.(AU)

Biofilm-related ocular infections can lead to vision loss and are difficult to treat with antibiotics due to challenges with application and increasing microbial resistance. In turn, the design and testing of new synthetic drugs is a time- and cost-consuming process. Therefore, in this work, for the first time, we assessed the in vitro efficacy of the plant-based abietic acid molecule, both alone and when introduced to a polymeric cellulose carrier, against biofilms formed by Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans in standard laboratory settings as well as in a self-designed setting using the topologically challenging surface of the artificial eye. These analyses were performed using the standard microdilution method, the biofilm-oriented antiseptic test (BOAT), a modified disk-diffusion method, and eyeball models. Additionally, we assessed the cytotoxicity of abietic acid against eukaryotic cell lines and its anti-staphylococcal efficacy in an in vivo model using Galleria mellonella larvae. We found that abietic acid was more effective against Staphylococcus than Pseudomonas (from two to four times, depending on the test applied) and that it was generally more effective against the tested bacteria (up to four times) than against the fungus C. albicans at concentrations non-cytotoxic to the eukaryotic cell lines and to G. mellonella (256 and 512 µg/mL, respectively). In the in vivo infection model, abietic acid effectively prevented the spread of staphylococcus throughout the larvae organisms, decreasing their lethality by up to 50%. These initial results obtained indicate promising features of abietic acid, which may potentially be applied to treat ocular infections caused by pathogenic biofilms, with higher efficiency manifested against bacterial than fungal biofilms.

Objective: To analyze the distribution of ocular bacterial pathogens and their antibiotic resistance status at a tertiary-care hospital and to provide a reference for the appropriate use of antibiotics. Methods: Retrospective analysis was conducted with bacteria isolated from the ophthalmic samples sent for lab analysis at a tertiary-care hospital from 2012 to 2021. The suspected bacterial strains were identified with automated systems for microbial identification and susceptibility analysis and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer. VITEK 2 Compact, an automated microbial identification and antibiotic susceptibility analysis system, was used for antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Results: A total of 1556 ophthalmology bacteria culture samples were collected, 574 of which showed bacterial growth, presenting an overall positive rate of 36.89%. Of the isolated bacteria, Gram-positive cocci, Gram-positive bacilli, Gram-negative bacilli, and Gram-negative cocci accounted for 63.15% (377/597), 18.76% (112/597), 17.09% (102/597), and 1.00% (6/597), respectively. Among the bacteria isolated in different years over the course of a decade, Gram-positive cocci always turned out to be the main cause of eye infections. Of the Gram-positive cocci, 73.47% (277/377) were isolated from patients with endophthalmitis, with the most important species being Staphylococcus epidermidis, which was followed by Streptococcus viridans. The rest, or 26.53% (100/377), of the Gram-positive cocci were isolated from patients with external eye infections, with the main isolated strains being Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus viridans, and Staphylococcus aureus. More than 70% of Staphylococcus epidermidis isolated from both endophthalmitis and external eye infections were resistant to methicillin. No strains resistant to vancomycin, linezolid, or tigecycline were detected. Staphylococcus epidermidis isolated from patients with external eye infections had a low rate of resistance to levofloxacin (2/27 or 7.41%), whereas those isolated from patients with endophthalmitis had a higher resistance rate (43/127 or 33.86%). The difference in drug resistance rate between the two groups was statistically significant (P<0.05). Conclusion: The chief ocular bacterial pathogens identified in a tertiary-care hospital were Gram-positive cocci, among which, Staphylococcus epidermidis was the most common species. The Staphylococcus epidermidis identified in the hospital had a high rate of resistance to oxacillin, but remained highly sensitive to vancomycin, linezolid, and tigecycline. The endophthalmitis caused by Staphylococcus epidermidis in the hospital can be treated empirically with vancomycin and then the treatment plan can be further adjusted according to the results of the drug susceptibility test. However, the establishment of the breakpoint of drug susceptibility test is mainly based on the model of bloodstream infection and has limited reference value for the treatment of eye infection. The required drug distribution concentration at the infection site can be achieved by dose increase or local administration.

BACKGROUND: Ocular issues such as impaired vision, ophthalmia, orbital cellulitis, and blindness are not common with dental infections. However, there is absence of set guidelines in prevention and management of ocular issues arising from dental infections. Hence the knowledge and vantage point of the dentists with respect to ocular complications arising from dental infections was evaluated. OBJECTIVE: This study reviews the knowledge of dentists with association of eye infection due to dental contamination. METHOD: A cross sectional survey using standardized questionnaires were sent suing social media platform among the academicians and practicing dental clinicians. All the questionnaires were content validated by three ophthalmologists. Descriptive statistics was scrutinized and tabulated by employing the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 17 (SPSS Inc., Chicago IL). Chi square tests was used. RESULTS: About 69.1%(65) and 30.9%( 29) of BDS and MDS grduates have experienced ocular complications because of dental contamination. This distribution showed no statistical significance (p = 0.25). 73.8% (183) and 28.2%( 65) had compliance with the eye protection, 77.7% (160) of BDS graduates and 22.3% (46) of MDS graduates preferred safety eye wear. This distribution showed statistical significance (p = 0.00). About 76.2% (279) of BDS graduates and 23.8%( 67) of MDS graduates faced ocular infections because of different types of splashes which included water, blood and saliva. (p = 0.23) CONCLUSION: This study puts an emphasis on the knowledge assessment among the dental practitioners on the importance of preventive barriers, and how special protective gear is required for doing cases undergoing dental treatment.

BACKGROUND: Delayed diagnosis and improper therapy for intraocular infections usually result in poor prognosis. Due to limitations of conventional culture and polymerase chain reaction methods, most causative pathogens cannot be identified from vitreous humor (VH) or aqueous humor (AH) samples with limited volume. METHODS: Patients with suspected intraocular infections were enrolled from January 2019 to August 2021. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) was used to detected causative pathogens. RESULTS: This multicenter prospective study enrolled 488 patients, from whom VH (152) and AH (336) samples were respectively collected and analyzed using mNGS of cell-free DNA (cfDNA). Taking final comprehensive clinical diagnosis as the gold standard, there were 39 patients with indefinite final diagnoses, whereas 288 and 161 patients were diagnosed as definite infectious and noninfectious diseases, respectively. Based on clinical adjudication, the sensitivity (92.2%) and total coincidence rate (81.3%) of mNGS using VH samples were slightly higher than those of mNGS using AH samples (85.4% and 75.4%, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Using mNGS of cfDNA, an era with clinical experience for more rapid, independent, and impartial diagnosis of bacterial and other intraocular infections can be expected.

Atypical mycobacteria or non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are a group of acid-fast bacteria that are pathogenic to different parts of the eye. The organisms can cause a spectrum of ocular infections including keratitis, scleritis, uveitis, endophthalmitis and orbital cellulitis. Trauma, whether surgical or nonsurgical, has the highest correlation with development of this infection. Common surgeries after which these infections have been reported include laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) and scleral buckle surgery. The organism is noted to form biofilms with sequestration of the microbe at different inaccessible locations leading to high virulence. Collection of infective ocular material (corneal scraping/necrotic scleral tissue/abscess material/vitreous aspirate, etc.) and laboratory identification of the organism through microbiologic testing are vital for confirming presence of the infection and initiating treatment. In cluster infections, tracing the source of infection in the hospital setting via testing of different in-house samples is equally important to prevent further occurrences. Although the incidence of these infections is low, their presence can cause prolonged disease that may often be resistant to medical therapy alone. In this review, we describe the various types of NTM-ocular infections, their clinical presentation, laboratory diagnosis, management, and outcomes.

PURPOSE: To describe the most important cause of infectious posterior uveitis in pediatric patients. METHODS: Review of the literature. RESULTS: The most important causes of infectious uveitis in pediatric patients are: cat-scratch disease, toxocariasis, tuberculosis, viral diseases and toxoplasmosis. Ocular manifestations include retinitis, neuroretinitis, choroidal granulomas, peripheral granulomas and posterior pole granulomas. CONCLUSION: Infectious posterior uveitis is a challenging subject and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of any posterior uveitis in children. Infectious uveitis must be excluded before initiating immunosuppressive therapy.

The development of potent bactericidal antibiotic alternatives is important to address the current antibiotic crisis. A representative example is the topical delivery of predatory Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus bacteria to treat ocular bacterial infection. However, the direct topical use of B. bacteriovorus suspensions has the problem of easy loss and inactivation. Here, a B. bacteriovorus in situ forming hydrogel (BIG) was constructed for the ocular delivery of B. bacteriovorus. BIGs, as a fluid in their primitive state, were temperature- and cation- dually sensitive, which was rapidly transformed into immobile gels in the ocular environment. BIGs not only kept the activity of B. bacteriovorus but also retained on the ocular surface for a long time. The biosafety of BIGs was good without HCEC cell toxicity and hemolysis. More importantly, BIGs highly inhibited the growth of drug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa whether in vitro or in the infected rat eyes. The ocular infection was completely controlled by BIGs with no corneal ulcers and inflammations. This living bacteria gel is a promising medication for the local treatment of drug-resistant bacteria-induced ocular infection.

Purpose: Staphylococcus epidermidis, a commensal, has emerged as an important opportunistic pathogen, particularly methicillin-resistant S. epidermidis (MRSE). The mechanism behind this transformation remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the molecular and phenotypic characteristics of MRSE isolated from healthy conjunctiva and ocular infections. Methods: We collected MRSE isolates from two groups: healthy conjunctiva from patients undergoing cataract surgeries and ocular infections at our hospital. Genotypic analysis included pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), multilocus sequence typing (MLST), staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec), and biofilm-related genes (icaA, aap, and bhp). Additionally, phenotypic data on biofilm production and antibiotic susceptibility were recorded. Results: A total of 86 isolates, including 42 from healthy conjunctiva and 44 from ocular infections, were analyzed. MLST identified 21 sequence types (STs), with ST59 being the most frequent (n = 33, 39.5%), followed by ST130 (n = 10, 11.6%), ST57 (n = 6, 7.0%), and ST2 (n = 6, 7.0%). All isolates were categorized in 23 PFGE types, and SCCmec IV was the most prevalent SCCmec type (n = 52, 60.5%). The two sources of isolates exhibited overlapping molecular types and phenotypic traits, although the ocular infection isolates exhibited significantly higher multidrug resistance compared to healthy conjunctiva isolates (P = 0.032). When contrasting ST59 with non-ST59, ST59 displayed a significantly higher presence of aap (100%) and bhp (69.7%) while lacking icaA (0%). ST59 also showed lower susceptibility to fluoroquinolones compared to non-ST59 (42.4%-54.5% vs. 75.5%-83.0%; P < 0.01). Conclusions: MRSE isolates from healthy conjunctiva and ocular infections demonstrated a degree of resemblance. Specific strains, notably ST59, exhibited distinctive characterizations.

BACKGROUND: Septicemia that leads to ocular involvement mostly presents as endophthalmitis or panophthalmitis. Contrarily, septicemia without intraocular involvement, known as hematogenous orbital cellulitis (HOC), involves only the orbit and is an extremely rare complication of septicemia and a rare type of orbital cellulitis. CASE PRESENTATION: Four male patients with septicemia presented with orbital involvement without intraocular infection were described in this study. They were 22 (case 1), 15 (case 2), 79 (case 3), and 30 (case 4) years old, with a mean age of 29.75 years. All patients were immunocompromised except for case 2. Cases 1 and 3 had a history of steroid use, whereas case 4 was in a post-chemotherapy myelosuppression phase. Septicemia in case 1 was community-acquired, cases 3 and 4 were hospital-acquired, and case 2 was secondary to acne squeezing. Blood cultures from cases 1, 2, and 3 were positive for Candida albicans, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and Klebsiella pneumoniae, respectively. Case 4 had negative cultures; however, next-generation sequencing reported the presence of Enterococcus faecalis and Rhizopus oryzae. Case 1 had right eye involvement, and both eyes were involved in the other three cases. According to Chandler's classification, case 1 was type 2, case 2 was type 2 (OD) and type 4 (OS), and cases 3 and 4 were type 1 orbital infections. All patients had eyelids erythema, and cases 1 and 2 had mildly decreased visual acuity, proptosis, and painful and restricted ocular motility. Hospital stays ranged from 13 to 43 days (mean, 24 days). All patients received systemic antibiotic therapy based on drug sensitivity and next-generation sequencing results, in combination with multidisciplinary treatment, resulting in complete recovery of ocular and systemic signs and symptoms; no ocular surgical interventions were performed. Extraocular muscle palsy was the last symptom to resolve. CONCLUSION: HOC is predominantly seen in immunocompromised individuals with a high proportion of hospital-acquired infections and positive cultures for pathogens. Infection control using systemic antibiotics targeted at the causative organism guarantees a favorable prognosis.

Human adenovirus (HAdV) is the primary cause of acute conjunctivitis. To improve our understanding of the etiology of adenoviral conjunctivitis, ocular samples were collected from 160 conjunctivitis cases in the Shanxi province of northern China between 2016 and 2019. Through preliminary identification, virus isolation, and type identification, a total of 63 HAdV isolates were obtained from the samples. Three species and seven types (HAdV-3, HAdV-4, HAdV-8, HAdV-37, HAdV-53, HAdV-64, and HAdV-85) were detected, with HAdV-64, HAdV-3, and HAdV-8 being the predominant types in 2016, 2018, and 2019, respectively. Further phylogenetic analysis indicated the relative genomic stability of seven HAdV-type strains, except for 4 HAdV-3 strains in 2018 with a novel amino acid insertion site (Pro) between P19 and S20 in the penton base gene. It is worth noting that the genomes of two Shanxi HAdV-85 strains from 2016 were almost identical to those of previously reported HAdV-85 strains that circulated in Japan in 2014 to 2018. China was the second country to sample and isolate HAdV-85, suggesting that HAdV-85 might be underreported as an ocular pathogen. Data obtained in this study provide valuable information on the prevalence of acute conjunctivitis caused by HAdV. IMPORTANCE HAdV types in cases of conjunctivitis in Shanxi province, China, in 2016 to 2019 showed evident diversity, with seven types (HAdV-3, HAdV-4, HAdV-8, HAdV-37, HAdV-53, HAdV-64, and HAdV-85) being identified, and relative genome stability of these viruses was observed. In addition, China was the second country to sample and isolate HAdV-85, which suggests that HAdV-85 might be underreported as an important pathogen associated with ocular infections. These results enhance the understanding of the etiology of adenoviral conjunctivitis and may aid in the development of prevention and control strategies for HAdV-related ocular infections in China.
